“Risky Routes” Wins the 2025 Bloomberg Green Docs Competition

July 16, 2025 – Risky Routes, a short documentary film about the amphibian migration in Switzerland, has been named the winner of the Bloomberg Green Docs competition. The contest honors short films addressing the urgency of climate change.

The winning film is the work of Thomas Klaper, Jonas Steiner and Roman Willi and follows a toad making its way back to the breeding ponds where it was born. Every year, thousands of toads undertake this dangerous journey to reproduce, navigating a path filled with life-threatening challenges — from busy roads to natural hazards — as they endeavor to reach their destination and ensure survival.

The finalists were selected by a jury consisting of Katie Cruz, Managing Director, The Redford Center; Lindsay Firestone, Film and Special Content Projects Lead, Bloomberg Philanthropies; Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, Co-Directors, Producers, Writers, Middletown; Aaron Rutkoff, Executive Editor, Bloomberg Green and Tre Shallowhorn, Global Head of Production, Bloomberg Originals.

The winner was announced at the Bloomberg Green Docs Film Festival, where the top five finalist films from the competition were screened. The festival also presented screenings of Middletown and Leaving the Point.

The Bloomberg Green Docs contest accepts submissions of short documentary films that are no more than ten minutes in length on a topic related to nature, global warming, the outdoors or the environment. The winner is awarded a $25,000 grand prize.
