Bloomberg Radio joins Radioplayer, extending potential UK audience reach by six million

LONDON, Wednesday July 27, 2016 – Bloomberg Radio today announced it is joining Radioplayer, the listening platform backed by the BBC and commercial radio, in a deal that will enable it to reach an additional six million potential listeners in the UK.

Bloomberg Radio delivers 24/7 market-moving news and analysis to a global audience of business leaders, financial professionals and C-suite executives. Originating from its London, New York, Washington D.C, Boston, San Francisco and Hong Kong bureaux, the programming draws on the strength of Bloomberg’s 2,600 journalists and analysts across more than 120 countries who produce more than 5,000 stories each day.

The station currently attracts more than 1.2m listeners in the United States. Bloomberg Radio is currently available in the UK via the Bloomberg Radio+ app for Apple iPhone and Android and online at Bloomberg.com/Audio. Bloomberg Radio is also available on Apple Music in more than 100 countries including the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the U.S., Argentina and Zimbabwe among others. Through its partnership with Radioplayer, Bloomberg Radio will now substantially extend its audience reach in the UK.

Radioplayer is a web and mobile app that aggregates more than 400 BBC and commercial radio stations, enabling consumers to browse a range of streams on a single platform. It can be accessed on all connected devices in the UK including iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire and Windows as well as the Apple Watch, Android Wear, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The company is also about to launch ‘Radioplayer Car’, a revolutionary ‘hybrid radio’ upgrade for older cars, which combines DAB digital radio with analogue FM and mobile streaming.

“We are delighted to be increasing the UK distribution of Bloomberg Radio by partnering with Radioplayer,“ says Justin Dewhirst, General Manager, Bloomberg Media, EMEA. “Our audience of business and financial professionals want to access Bloomberg’s smart, relevant content wherever they are, and expanding our audio strategy is another key milestone in our evolution towards a global, digital-first, truly cross-platform media brand,” he adds.

Michael Hill, Managing Director, Radioplayer, adds: “We’re proud that prestigious brands like Bloomberg can see the value of joining the BBC and the rest of the industry on the Radioplayer platform. Working together enables us to get radio into emerging devices, and make Bloomberg Radio’s brilliant content discoverable through our innovative search and recommendation engines.”

Bloomberg Radio programming from Europe launched earlier this year with flagship European breakfast show ‘First Word Europe’, which airs each business day from London at 6am – 10am BST. Newly appointed anchor Markus Karlsson joins the Bloomberg Radio Europe line-up this month, bringing more than a decade of international broadcasting experience to the role, most recently as Business Editor at France 24. Karlsson will report alongside Caroline Hepker who joined Bloomberg Radio from the BBC where she anchored ‘Wake Up to Money’ on BBC Radio 5LIVE.

Last year, Bloomberg Radio also introduced four hours of daily programming from Asia Pacific. The addition of ‘First Word Asia’ and ‘First Word Europe’ provide listeners with continuous financial markets coverage from the opening of the Asian markets on Mondays to the U.S. markets close on Fridays. Global radio advertising revenue has grown 30 percent through May 2016 compared to last year.
