Bloomberg News Recognized for Opinion Writing at SOPA 2016 Awards

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) recently held the 2016 Awards for Editorial Excellence in Hong Kong, honouring Bloomberg News with its highest award for Excellence in Opinion Writing. The piece, titled, ‘The Roots of Rage’ by columnist Pankaj Mishra, was recognized for its deep, insightful analysis on the global rise of the Islamic State.

The judges praised Mishra’s ability to ‘shed light on a complicated topic which is all too often written from a Western Point of View’ and they added that his columns were ‘superbly crafted and challenge the reader’.
David Merritt, Executive Editor for Asia Pacific, added, ‘We’re thrilled to be recognized in this category for the first time at SOPA and it demonstrates our commitment to produce hard-hitting, informative commentary on some of the most important stories in our lifetime’.

Bloomberg News was also recognized this year for the categories, ‘Reporting on Women’s Issues’ (Wife on the Run From Pakistan Honor Killing says No One Can Escape) and ‘Reporting on the Environment’ (Farmers Driven From Homes ‘Like Pests’ by Dam Projects).

The full list of awards and winners can be found on the SOPA website here.

Ma Ying-jeou visits Bloomberg
Bloomberg hosted the former President of the Republic of China (ROC), Mr. Ma Ying-jeou, at its Taipei bureau to pre-record his keynote speech, as he was unable to attend the SOPA 2016 awards dinner in person. Bloomberg’s Taipei Bureau Chief, Debra Mao, also took the opportunity to interview him about Taiwan’s democratic model and potential ways to resolve tensions around the South China Sea.
